HowToSwiss is designed to minimise data collection. We use limited browser storage to remember essential preferences and make the site easier to use. We do not sell personal data.

What we store in your browser

• Canton selection — remembers the canton you have selected so guides and tools adapt to your location.
• Theme preference — remembers whether you chose light or dark mode.
• Checklist progress — stores completed checklist items in your browser only.

When you tick off items on a checklist, your progress is saved only in your browser's local storage. It is not sent to our servers, and we cannot view, retrieve or restore it. Clearing browser or site data will reset your saved progress.

Consent management

Where required by European regulations, consent for analytics and advertising cookies is collected through Google's consent management platform (delivered via Google's ad services). Before you make a choice, Google's Consent Mode keeps analytics and advertising storage in a denied state, so no analytics or advertising cookies are written to your browser.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand, in aggregate, which pages and tools are useful. Analytics storage is gated by Google's Consent Mode: nothing is stored in your browser for analytics until you grant consent. Once you accept, two cookies may be set — _ga and _ga_* — and your IP address is truncated before processing. Data is used only for aggregate site analytics. Cookie categories

• Strictly necessary — local storage entries for your canton, theme and checklist progress. These are required for the site to function and are not set by third parties.
• Analytics — Google Analytics 4 cookies (_ga, _ga_*), set only after you grant consent.
• Advertising — HowToSwiss does not currently display ad units. If advertising is enabled in the future, advertising cookies will only be set after consent through Google's consent message.

How to clear browser storage

You can clear cookies and local storage for this site at any time from your browser's settings (usually under "Privacy", "Site data" or "Clear browsing data"). Doing so will reset your canton, theme and checklist progress.

Change your consent

You can update or withdraw your choices at any time via the Privacy and cookie settings link in the footer, which reopens Google's consent message. The control appears once Google's consent message is available in your region.
