Upgrade from B permit to C permit
The C permit (Niederlassungsbewilligung) gives you permanent residence. EU/EFTA citizens can apply after 5 years; non-EU typically after 10 years. It gives you more rights and removes the need for annual renewals.
Step by step
- 1
Confirm eligibility
EU/EFTA: 5 years uninterrupted residence. Non-EU: 10 years (reduced to 5 in some cantons for well-integrated applicants). USA/Canada nationals: 5 years by bilateral agreement.
- 2
Demonstrate integration
Language skills (typically B1 oral, A2 written), knowledge of Swiss society, clean criminal record, no outstanding debts or welfare dependency.
- 3
Gather documentation
All B permit renewal docs plus language certificates, integration proof, tax clearance certificate, and Betreibungsauszug.
- 4
Apply at your migration office
Submit at your cantonal Migrationsamt. Processing takes 2–4 months.
- 5
Receive your C permit
Unlimited validity (renewed every 5 years for the physical card only). Gives access to self-employment and mortgage lending.
