How to get a B permit
The B permit is the standard residence permit for foreigners staying longer than one year. It is tied to a job, family, or studies.
Step by step
- 1
Confirm your eligibility
EU/EFTA: any employment contract of 12+ months. Non-EU: employer must prove no Swiss/EU candidate was available.
- 2
Employer applies first
For Non-EU, the employer files with the cantonal labor authority and federal SEM. Approval takes 4–12 weeks.
- 3
Receive entry visa
Non-EU only. Issued by the Swiss embassy in your home country after federal approval.
- 4
Enter Switzerland and register
Within 14 days, register at the Gemeinde. They start the permit issuance process.
- 5
Receive the physical permit
Credit-card-sized biometric card mailed in 2–8 weeks. Valid 5 years (EU) or 1 year renewable (Non-EU).
