Bringing your family to Switzerland
Family reunification allows your spouse and children under 18 to join you in Switzerland. The process differs significantly between EU/EFTA and non-EU families.
Step by step
- 1
Confirm eligibility
EU spouses: nearly automatic with marriage certificate. Non-EU: you must prove adequate housing and income above the social welfare threshold.
- 2
Gather family documents
Marriage certificate (apostilled), children's birth certificates, passport photos, and proof of Swiss housing.
- 3
Apply for family reunification
File at your cantonal migration office. Include proof of income, housing contract showing adequate space.
- 4
Wait for processing
EU: 2–4 weeks. Non-EU: 6–12 weeks. Family members receive their own B permits upon arrival.
- 5
Register family at Gemeinde
Each family member must be registered individually within 14 days of arrival. Bring all permits and certificates.
