Frequently asked questions

Is health insurance mandatory in Switzerland?
Yes — every resident must take out basic health insurance (KVG/LAMal) within 3 months of arrival. Coverage is retroactive to your registration date, so don't delay.
How much does Swiss health insurance cost?
Adult premiums for basic coverage range from CHF 280 to CHF 550 per month depending on canton, age, insurer and franchise. Geneva, Basel-Stadt and Vaud have the highest premiums; Appenzell, Nidwalden and Uri the lowest.
What is a franchise (Selbstbehalt) in Swiss insurance?
The franchise is your annual deductible — you pay this much out-of-pocket before insurance starts paying. Adult options: 300, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000 or 2500. Higher franchise = lower premium, but you carry more risk.
Can I switch health insurer in Switzerland?
Yes, once a year. Send a written cancellation by 30 November and your new insurer takes over from 1 January. Basic coverage is identical by law — only price and service differ.
Are children covered by their parents' insurance?
No — every person needs their own contract. Children's premiums are much lower (around CHF 90–140/month) and many cantons offer subsidies for families.
