How to renew your B permit

Your B permit must be renewed before it expires. EU/EFTA permits are valid for 5 years; non-EU permits are typically renewed annually. Start the process 2–3 months early.
Step by step

Check your expiry date
Your permit card shows the expiry date. Set a calendar reminder 3 months before.

Gather required documents
Valid passport, current employment contract, proof of address, and the current permit card.

Submit renewal application
File at your canton's migration office (Migrationsamt). Many cantons allow online submission.

Pay the renewal fee
CHF 70–150 depending on canton. Processing takes 2–6 weeks.

Receive your new permit
New biometric card arrives by post. Your old card may need to be returned.
