31 March. Missing this deadline can lead to fines or delays in your permit.

If you have a C permit, are Swiss, or earn over CHF 120,000 with a B permit, you must file a tax return. Otherwise tax is withheld at source.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Receive your tax forms

Cantons send paper or activation codes for online filing in January–February.

  2. 2

    Gather supporting documents

Salary statement (Lohnausweis), bank statements, pension contributions, insurance, medical expenses, professional expenses.

  3. 3

    File online or via software

Most cantons have a free online portal. Third-party tools like Taxon, Smart Tax, or Tax-Easy guide you through deductions.

  4. 4

    Request an extension if needed

Free extensions until 30 September are routine. Just submit the form before 31 March.

  5. 5

    Pay (or get refunded)

Provisional bill arrives mid-year. Final assessment 6–18 months later. You pay or receive the difference.
