If you have a C permit, are Swiss, or earn over CHF 120,000 with a B permit, you must file a tax return. Otherwise tax is withheld at source.
Step by step

Receive your tax forms
Cantons send paper or activation codes for online filing in January–February.

Gather supporting documents
Salary statement (Lohnausweis), bank statements, pension contributions, insurance, medical expenses, professional expenses.

File online or via software
Most cantons have a free online portal. Third-party tools like Taxon, Smart Tax, or Tax-Easy guide you through deductions.

Request an extension if needed
Free extensions until 30 September are routine. Just submit the form before 31 March.
- 5
Pay (or get refunded)
Provisional bill arrives mid-year. Final assessment 6–18 months later. You pay or receive the difference.
