Choosing your Krankenkasse and deductible
The franchise (deductible) is the amount you pay out-of-pocket before insurance kicks in. Choosing the right franchise can save you CHF 1,000+ per year.
Step by step
- 1
Understand the franchise options
Adults choose between CHF 300, 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, or 2,500. Children: CHF 0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, or 600.
- 2
Calculate the break-even point
High franchise (CHF 2,500): lowest monthly premium but you pay the first CHF 2,500 of medical costs. Best for healthy people. Low franchise (CHF 300): highest premium but minimal out-of-pocket. Best if you expect regular medical costs.
- 3
Compare insurance models
Standard: see any doctor. Hausarzt: must go through your GP first (saves 10–15%). HMO: must use a specific medical center (saves 15–20%). Telmed: call a hotline first (saves 10–15%).
- 4
Switch annually if needed
You can switch insurers every year. Give notice by 30 November for the next calendar year. Basic coverage is identical across all providers.
